Dan has always been passionate about teaching - whether it be music, martial arts, or tutoring math and physics. He has spent many years as a freelance woodwind instructor and has also been a faculty clinician with Tom Lee Music, Long and McQuade, the Whistler and Sun Peaks Music Festivals, as well as the West Vancouver Youth Band and a number of high school programs and other community ensembles. In addition, Dan maintains a busy year-round private teaching schedule at his home studio, teaching saxophone, flute, oboe, clarinet, and harmonica, as well as tutoring theory and basic piano.
Dan is comfortable teaching a wide range of genres and styles, and students are always encouraged to bring in music that they are passionate about - from Taylor Swift to Jimi Hendrix and everything in between. He stresses a holistic approach to teaching, allowing students to develop their own musical creativity while developing competency on their instrument and a familiarity with the building blocks of music. Reading and writing sheet music, while a fundamental musical skill, is not always a part of a particular student's musical goals, so this is always an optional focus of lessons.
"Dan is a really nice teacher and he’s good at getting to know you. You get to learn to play songs that are popular and it makes playing the saxophone more fun. His style of teaching makes it fun to learn. With my lessons with Dan, I feel more confident that I’ll be able to make it into the High School band."
"My wife Sally and myself consider ourselves to be very fortunate to have Dan providing oboe lessons to our son. Duncan is now going into this third year with Dan and always looks forward to his weekly lessons. Dan always has a positive attitude and is very encouraging and professional. We would not have any hesitation in recommending Dan."

"Dan is an enthusiastic, creative, and talented teacher who manages to make every lesson inspiring (even when I haven't done all the practicing I should have). He blends an appropriate mix of theory, technique, learning new pieces, and improvisation and relates each to what we've been working on in the other. In the 11 years I've been playing the saxophone as an adult student, he is by-far the best instructor I've had. Highly recommended."
"Dan has taught my teenage daughter both Oboe and Saxophone for the past three years. His dedication and kindness has greatly enhanced her learning experience, and her skill at both instruments has greatly improved with his help."
